Seasonal Livestock Specialist

April-October Positions:

Field Vegetable Grower -

40-50 hours per week. This is a full time, seasonal position (April - October) with possibility of year-round work. We are looking for a farmer with several years experience, at least 3-5.

Responsibilities

The Field Vegetable Grower (FVG) is responsible for executing the 5 acre FFF field vegetable crop plan including bed prep, seeding, transplanting, weed and pest control, harvesting and washing. The FVG will also be responsible for leading the rest of the field vegetable team, which includes a full time Assistant Field Vegetable Grower and a small crew of 1-3 people 1-2 days per week. The FVG position is full time (minimum 40 hrs/week) from March-October. Year-round employment and advancement is available for responsible and motivated individuals. The FVG reports to the Farm Manager, who is responsible for producing the crop plan.

Qualifications

  •  3+ years experience in organic vegetable production, including tractor operation

  • Experience using different cultivation equipment including 3-point hitch and belly mounted cultivators

  • Experience using different tillage and bed prep equipment

  • Strong self-motivation to complete tasks thoroughly, efficiently, and correctly 

  • Ability to lead and communicate with crew members efficiently and effectively

  • Ability to keep accurate and up to date fertility, planting, and harvest records for organic certification

  • Willing to commit to an entire season of showing up every work day, focused, on time, in all types of weather (barring completely unavoidable emergencies)

  • Willing to work 50+ hours per week during peak season (June-Aug) if necessary to complete all Field Vegetable tasks

Compensation

  • Pay commensurate with experience, attitude, and responsibility. Range: $13-16/hr

Assistant Greenhouse Grower -

40-50 hours per week. This is a full time, seasonal position (April - October) with possibility of year-round work.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Greenhouse Grower (AGG) is responsible for assisting in all aspects of greenhouse production, including plant propagation for field and greenhouse planting as well as greenhouse vegetable production, harvesting, and washing/packing. The position is full time, seasonal with a minimum of 40 hours per week from April-October. Opportunities for year-round work and advancement are available for responsible, motivated individuals. During a typical week, the AGG will spend the first few days of the week working on production. Thursdays and Fridays will be harvest days, with this task taking up the bulk of those days during peak season. The AGG will report to the Greenhouse Manager. The AGG will also assist with other farm tasks such as field vegetable transplanting, cultivating, harvesting, washing, etc. as time allows and/or as needed. Assistant Field Vegetable Grower -

40-50 hours per week. This is a full time, seasonal position (April - October) with possibility of year-round work.

The Assistant Field Vegetable Grower (AFVG) is responsible for assisting with all aspects of production and harvest in the 5 acre FFF Field Vegetable operation, including plant propagation, bed prep, seeding, transplanting, weed and pest control, harvesting and washing. The position is full time (minimum 40 hrs/week) from April-October. Year-round employment and advancement is available for responsible and motivated individuals. During a typical week, the AFVG will spend most of their time performing vegetable production (mostly transplanting, mulching, and weeding) or harvesting work in the field vegetables. During slower times of year, the AFVG will assist with market garden and greenhouse vegetable production and harvesting or other farm tasks as needed. MAy-NoVEMBER Positions:


Farmers’ Market & Farm Store Staff (Part Time) -

We are looking for part-time retail help during the main season. Year-round work is possible for the right person. Note: These positions can be combined with another job at the farm.

Farmers’ Market Staff

We are looking for someone to join our team at the vibrant Somerville Union Square Farmers’ Market on Saturdays (May - November).

- Duties includes:

  • Setting / packing up for market

  • Assisting farm customers and educating them on our food

  • Stocking and keeping our displays looking beautiful

Qualifications & Compensation:

  • We are looking for someone self-motivated, hardworking, who cares about local food, community & enjoys talking to people.

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and work regardless of weather. Before applying make sure you are available 95% of the market season.

  • ServeSafe Certification desired, but not required.

  • Compensation is $12-$14 / hour depending on experience. Plus free produce.

Farm Store Staff

We are looking for help at our farm store in Raynham, MA, on Fridays & Saturdays (May - November).

- Duties includes:

  • Setting up the store / cleaning up

  • Assisting farm customers, CSA members and educating them on our food

  • Stocking and keeping our displays looking beautiful

Qualifications & Compensation:

  • We are looking for someone self-motivated, hardworking, who cares about local food, community & enjoys talking to people.

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and be comfortable with technology. Before applying make sure you are available 95% of the summer season.

  • Compensation is $12- $14 / hour, depending on experience. Plus free produce.

June - September Positions:


Seasonal Livestock Specialist -

40-50 hours per week. This is a full time, seasonal position (June - September) with possibility of year-round work.

Responsibilities

The Seasonal Livestock Specialist (SLS) is responsible for assisting with all aspects of livestock production at Freedom Food Farm. The position is seasonal, full time (minimum 40 hrs/week) from June-August. Year-round employment and advancement is available for responsible and motivated individuals. During a typical week, the SLS will be responsible for morning and afternoon chores for the beef cows, hogs, and sheep at the farm. Additionally, the SLS will be responsible for setting up and taking down temporary livestock fence for pasture moves and moving animals into new pastures. The SLS will also assist with vegetable production at the farm as time allows or as needed. The SLS will report to the Farm Manager. Find a more detailed job description here.

  • Assist in livestock production at FFF  

  • Perform morning and evening chores for roughly 15 cows, 20 ewes, 30 lambs, 2 hogs and 10 feeder pigs.

  • Set up and take down temporary electric fence for pasture moves as needed, including electronets and single or multi strand electric fence.

  • Assist in keeping accurate records of all important information for organic certification including feed amounts, pasture moves, and herd lists

  • Assist with vegetable production such as transplanting, weeding, harvesting and washing as time allows or as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year experience in agriculture

  • Strong desire to learn about organic, pasture-based livestock production

  • Willingness to show up every work day on time, ready to work, with a great attitude, barring unforeseen emergencies

  • Willingness to work in all types of weather

  • $12/hr

ABOUT The FARM & Crew

Freedom Food Farm is an 88 acre, four season, diversified vegetable and livestock farm. We produce a wide-range of products year-round, including: vegetables, fruit, grains, medicinal herbs, honey, pasture-raised meat, flowers, plant starts, hay and value-added products. In 2019 we are adding a no-till market garden and focusing our farming energy on carbon sequestration, soil health & balance across the farm. We are committed to regenerative agriculture and never use any pesticides, herbicides, GMOs, antibiotics, hormones, or other chemicals at our farm.
