Farm Events

Freedom Food Farm is a community focused farm. Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program supports the farm and we offer free access to pick-your-own vegetables, strawberries, herbs, flowers, etc. and workshops/educational events on the farm in return. We believe in building community through food, education and farm events for all ages for farm customers and our neighbors. We welcome anyone to come to the farm to visit during regular farm store hours or for one of our upcoming events.

2017 Workshops

Our farm offers workshops on sustainable living, farming, gardening, homesteading, herbal medicine, natural health & beauty, clean eating, food preservation, seasonal cooking and nature inspired art.

Typically workshops are taught by our farmers. This year most of our farmers are on sabbatical and focusing on producing a full diet from our farm. We are excited that the 2017 workshops will primarily be taught by CSA and farm community members.

Green Cleaning Workshop - July 15th

So, what does “kills 99.99% of germs” really mean and what exactly are you cleaning anyway? In this workshop, learn the ins and outs of cleaning for a greener, safer home and world. What is practical and impractical when it comes to germs and cleaning. Work with bacteria instead of against them and beat the myth that industrial chemical cleaners do the job better than soap, water, and other simple ingredients. Your immune system will thank you!

About the Instructor: Laurie White is a professional house cleaner with 20 years of experience. After struggling for years with asthma, she realized that sometimes conventional treatments do more harm than good. Adopting a simple breathing technique, she was able to slowly ween herself off most asthma medications. With all this success, she began to look for ways to apply this “less is more” ideology to the rest of her life and, of course, cleaning was at the top of her list. She began to ask why do we need all these chemicals and what are their effects on people and the environment?

Laurie is a wife and mother of three. In her free time, she enjoys gardening and crafting.

Cost: Workshop is $10 per person or free for our summer CSA members!

PYO Flowers & Bouquet Making - August 19th

Pick your own flowers on our farm with Marie Kaziunas our cut flower & herb farmer and learn how to make a beautiful bouquet that lasts without chemicals! We grow many annual cut flowers on the farm including a variety of sunflowers, zinnias, snap dragons, statice, etc. Learn about cut flower varieties you can grow at home, best practices for growing, harvesting & making bouquets and the art of natural floral arrangements.

About the instructor: Marie has been helping grow cut flowers and creating bouquets for market at Freedom Food Farm for the last five years. She also runs our medicinal herb growing & preserving at the farm. She loves to spend time harvesting plants for healing and bringing natural beauty into the indoors. Cost: Workshop is $10 per person or free for our summer CSA members!

Healthy Dogs & Farm Grown Treats - September 23rd

Holistic Hound Workshop with Sweet Wolf Treats & Training!

Workshop will cover how to incorporate fresh, whole ingredients into your dog's diet and create healthy home made treats. We'll cover holistic canine nutrition and learn how to better navigate the commercial pet food industry. Instrutors Liz and Doug will also discuss natural supplements / whole foods that can assist in common ailments such as anxiety and arthritis in dogs.

You'll get to create your own treats to bring home from ingredients harvested right here at the farm! Including local, organic and unprocessed foods can help dogs feel their best and eases owner's woes about large scale commercial pet foods. Learn what makes dogs drool (in the good way!) as well as what foods to avoid in this dog-centric workshop.

About the instructors: Sweet Wolf is a collaboration between a dog lover, farmer and chef Doug Higley and a dog trainer, canine care specialist and part-time farmer Liz White.

Cost: Workshop is $10 per person or free for our summer CSA members!

Medicinal Roots & Fire Cider Workshop - October 7th

This herbal medicine workshop will focus on seasonal, local remedies.  We will discuss the harvest and preparation of medicinal roots as well as their uses. Learn the basics of using food as medicine and how to make your own natural remedies using roots, including decoctions, tinctures, and fire cider. We will sample some finished fire cider and demonstrate the making of a new batch.

About the instructor: Chantalle is an aspiring holistic health coach and herbalist from the south shore. After studying Environmental Science and Sustainable Food and Farming at UMASS Amherst, she went on to study herbal medicine in a two year apprenticeship program at the Boston School of Herbal Studies. There she was trained on the home use of herbs as well as clinical practice and diagnosis. Chantalle recently graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as a Holistic Health Coach and wishes to help others take their health into their own hands!

Cost: Workshop is $10 per person or free for our summer CSA members!

Build Your Own Wood Fired Oven -  October 21st

Workshop covers how to make a wood-fired oven made only with clay and sand. We'll build the oven in one day and will be making pizza with farm grown ingredients in the oven at end of the workshop. This is the simplest of ovens that anyone can build in their backyard.

About the instructor: Martin Pearson is a master stone mason, oven craftsman and self-sufficiency expert. Martin has been building custom soapstone fireplaces and wood-fired ovens for over 35 years across the country and internationally. Martin owns and operates Stone Comfort Fireplace Gallery in Plainville, MA.
